There is no way a business could operate today with bothering about environmental management. There is so much talk about environmental damage that it would be hard to ignore it. Today, all businesses have a role to play in protecting the environment.
Environmental protection is no longer something to be left for the big oil and gas producers to handle. A closer look at what is happening to the environment should tell anyone that the little things we do that seem so innocent are actually contributing to the degradation of the environment.
As such it is important for businesses no matter their size to have an environmental management system in place. Ideally the iso 9001 training standards should be used to implement environmental management systems. Once a system is in place, it should be used to determine how well the organization is doing and what could be done to make their processes better.
You should be able to determine if your business generates air emission and if it does if you are currently monitoring these emissions. Your business should also be able to answer if they have procedures and polic1es in place to monitor emissions and if adequate training has been given to employees.
Waste water management
If you generate waste water, you should be able to answer questions on whether you have polices and procedure for managing waste water. You should also be able to show that such policies and procedures are constantly audited. Also if you have a site where the waste water is generated, you should be able to show a site plan for the drainage.
Determine if you generate, waste such as solid waste, hazardous waste, clinical waste or other types of waste. You should be able to detail the activity that generates the waste and any disposal methods currently in place.
Handling and storage
Does your company have any type of storage facility and if so where is it position. It could be underground or above surface. Also are there procedures for handling such storage, if yes have they been audited.
Soil and ground water protection
If you have reasons to think there may be ground water contamination, you should be ready to show what your business has done so far to prevent further contamination.
If your business creates a lot of noise, you should be able to come up with policies and procedures to help reduce such noise especially if there are sensitive subjects around your area of operation.
Other environmental impacts
Are there any other environmental impacts like dust, vibrations and odour resulting from your activities? If so what have you done, to reduce the impact?
Impact on supply chain
While your environmental management system is for your company, you should include your suppliers. They should be aware of the system and be ready to work closely with you to ensure implementation.
